  Nine pages of tone table in the right hand on the wrong paper. The tradition's only serious forgery, caught in eleven days, and remembered less for the fraud than for what the catching revealed about everybody's filing.

  A maintenance conference bridge cut into service in 1971 so that craftsmen on a long rural route could talk to each other. It was never a social facility and became one anyway, which is the whole of the origin story.

  Vesper's operator. Stopped coming to meets in 1995, stopped answering post in 1996, and left a machine that went on answering correctly until 2001. Almost everything said about him is inference from a login banner.

• The 1986 problem
  Nailhouse and Dead Letter opened four months apart and nobody can establish which was first. A small question that turns out to be the load-bearing one for everything written about the two boards afterwards.

  The Cold Handshake was withdrawn with a stated reason that was true and was not the reason. The tradition found the manoeuvre so instructive that it made a word out of it.

  A cartridge went from Dead Letter to Nailhouse ten months before the Armistice. It is the only object known to have moved between the two boards, and the only physical evidence that the eleven years ended in something other than exhaustion.

  An annual gathering numbered ordinally and never dated in speech. Somewhere between nine and twenty people, no agenda, and a convention against writing anything down that has left the tradition with almost no record of its only regular event.
