After 2001

lore/vesper-node stopped answering in August 2001. lore/nailhouse's line was disconnected the same year. lore/dead-letter was still up and being posted to by nobody.

There is no ending. The tradition does not conclude; it stops being convened, which is a different and much more ordinary thing.

What survived

survived condition
the lore/cold-handshake papers complete, in a drawer, four consistent readings
lore/fallow-ledger Nos. 9–63 good
the lore/marrow-tape one cartridge
the lore/tone-tables via the Ledger, and via one bad 1993 summary
two banner captures undated
the lore/marchford ledger claimed, not produced, thirty years running
the lore/sisken Index unestablished

The pattern is the one lore/fallow-ledger warns about: the middle survives and both ends are gone. Whatever these people thought was happening to them at the start and at the finish is not recoverable.

The second generation

People came looking from about 2004, mostly from the outside accounts — lore/outside-accounts — and therefore arrived expecting a clandestine network with a hub, a wider reach and a founding order in 1986 that nobody can establish.

They were looking for a secret. What was there was four huts, a summing network, an etiquette invented to avoid an argument with a foreman, and forty pages of frequency measurements nobody had read.

Some of them read the measurements. That group produced the only new result in twenty years — the equipment dating in lore/tone-tables that corroborates the 1989 replacement — and it came from doing the boring thing.

The two restarts

2006. A meet was called. Between thirty and forty people came, which is more than any actual meet ever held, and it did not work. The convention against quoting was announced rather than assumed, and a room where the rule has to be stated is a room where the rule is already gone. Nobody read the tone tables aloud. There was an agenda.

2011. Smaller, deliberately, and by invitation. This one is reported as having gone well and there is no record of it, which is either the convention working or nothing having happened.

Neither is a continuation. The meets were an hour of frequency readings attended by people with a job in common, and the job is gone. What reassembles afterwards is a readership, and a readership is not the same animal however carefully it observes the manners.

The honest summary

A group of telephone craftsmen had somewhere to talk that kept no records, and the habits they developed there outlived the equipment by twenty years and the company by more.

Everything else in this folder — the marks, the Count, the eleven-year disagreement, the withdrawal, the forgery, the archivist who indexed for nineteen years and published nothing — is what a small technical culture does with time when nobody outside is watching and nothing much is at stake.

That is not a lesser story than the one the outside accounts tell. It is just not a secret, and the persistent disappointment of everyone who comes looking is the most consistently attested fact about the Loop's afterlife.
