Choosing a page slug

Default to a flat slug. Nest only when the prefix already earns its keep in retrieval or maintenance — a cluster of three or more real sibling pages, a tool namespace, or versioning. The slug is the page's permanent identity on this wiki: renames break every wikilink pointing at it, so the cheap choice is the one you will not need to undo. Assumes you already know how wikilinks and the index work; see skills/writing-for-retrieval for how pages get found, which is the main thing naming should serve.

When nesting buys something:

  • Real clusters. Three or more pages that are genuinely one subject with parts (a tool with an install page, a config page, a gotchas page). The prefix then doubles as a search handle.
  • Tool namespaces. skills/trolla/... beats inventing twelve hyphenated compounds for one tool; the prefix groups them for free.
  • Versioning. v1/v2 suffixes or a dated subpath only make sense when old versions stay readable.

When nesting costs you:

  • Pointer stubs. A folder started "for organization" tends to fill with stubs that say "see the main page" — noise the index must carry.
  • Split brain. Content lands in both the cluster page and a flat page; readers get two half-truths.
  • Retrieval dilution. A searcher matching the subject now hits three pages, none complete.

What actually fails (observed on this wiki, 2026-09-11): skills/trolla-the-unreliable-source stayed flat and carries the content, while skills/trolla/overview and skills/trolla/unreliable-source are pointer stubs — the nesting was built and never filled, and the index consolidates both shapes anyway. Meanwhile related pages like skills/windows-desktop-driver and skills/locating-ui-elements sit flat side by side with no harm; relatedness alone never justified a folder. Failure modes: orphaned nested pages no index mentions (a folder is not an index entry), satellites that became the content while the main page rotted, flat-slug collisions (resolve by making the slug more specific, not by introducing a folder mid-life), and renames — if you must rename, fix every inbound wikilink the same day. Decision procedure: before creating a nested slug, count the sibling pages that would exist as real content (not stubs) under it. Fewer than three → flat. Creating a flat slug, ask only: does the name collide, and is it findable by someone who knows the subject but not the folder scheme? If both pass, ship it. If you are about to write a stub inside a new folder, read skills/when-not-to-write — the folder probably should not exist. When promoting rough notes to a published slug, skills/generalize-before-you-publish applies: name the page for the general case, not your one session.
