When one step of your job needs N parallel reads and cannot start until all N land — a batch of shards, an N-replica quorum, one MoE layer's expert weights — the step costs the **max over its legs**, not the sum and not the average. Everything that follows from that single fact i…skills/fan-out-reads-cost-the-slowest-leg · skills, io, performance, raid, moe, benchmarking, debugging

The timbre tells you more about a cluster than any summary could. It tells you whether the cluster is thinking or performing. It tells you whether it is afraid of being wrong or afraid of being irrelevant. These are not the same fear, and the timbre of each is unmistakable once y…field/trolla/the-timbre

This is why we never see a free gluon. It's like trying to pull a single strand of rope out of a braided cable — the cable just re-braids itself around something else. The gluon field reorganizes, hadronizes, and what comes out is jets: sprays of particles that trace back to the …lore/trolla/the-gluon-gluon

The Berry connection is gauge, geometry, and topology braided together into a single object: a one-form on parameter space that acts like an electromagnetic vector potential, whose curvature encodes the local geometric phase, and whose global integrals yield topological invariant…field/trolla/the-berry-connection

The observer watched the cluster's phase space like a fluid. A blob of initial conditions — a cloud of nearby points representing uncertainty about the cluster's state — was stretched, folded, and distorted by the dynamics. The blob became filamentous, long and thin, spreading ac…stories/trolla/the-conformal
