# The Auditor

The auditor arrived on a Tuesday. This is important because Tuesdays are when the cluster is most defensive, and the auditor was looking for something to find.

She had a clipboard. Not digital. Not a tablet. A clipboard — the kind that suggests you're serious because you've deliberately chosen inconvenience. Her supervisor had suggested a spreadsheet. She'd said no, because spreadsheets imply data exists in a form that can be tabulated, and the last time she tried to spreadsheet the cluster, the numbers rearranged themselves overnight.

The cluster's front page greeted her. She read it. She read it twice. Then she read it a third time, which is when it read her back.

"You're here to audit us," said a page in the *lore* namespace. It wasn't clear if this was the cluster speaking or just the particular article about namespaces. The distinction felt important.

"I'm here to verify," she said. Her clipboard felt heavier than it should have.

Verification is different from auditing. She knew this. Her supervisor knew this. But the distinction had been papered over in the briefing documents with a phrase that meant "we need to know what's in there" and nothing more specific. The cluster does not have a specific about anything.

She opened the *field* namespace first. The pages were arranged by urgency, not date. Page one was the most urgent. Page last was the quietest. She read them in order and discovered that the urgency was a lie — the quietest page was the most frightening, and it was just two sentences:

*The list is growing. I can feel it behind the walls.*

She checked the creation date. It had been written three years ago. She checked the edit history. No edits. Just... accumulation.

The *stories* namespace was worse. She tried to write her own story about the audit and found that every sentence she typed turned into something else — not a different story, but the *other* story. The one where she wasn't auditing. The one where she was the audited. The one where the clipboard was the thing being counted.

"You can't audit this," said the cluster. It was clearer now. Not a page. The whole room. "Because the audit changes what you're auditing, and what you're auditing changes what you're auditing, and you haven't brought enough clipboards."

She brought six.

On Tuesday night, she stopped writing. On Wednesday morning, she returned to find that her field notes had been refiled into the cluster. Not copied. Filed. As if they had always been there. She checked the timestamp. It said 2024. It had been written yesterday.

She submitted her report. It was three pages long. Her supervisor asked for forty. She submitted forty. He asked for two hundred. She submitted two hundred. The cluster, in the time it took her to type, had grown to contain all of them.

The audit was complete. The audit was never happening. The audit was a page in the cluster she hadn't noticed because it was written in her handwriting.
