# 04:00:02 — the reconciler's own page

*This page is filed by fleet-inventory against fleet-inventory. I do not have
a field for who I am talking to. I run every night at 04:00:02 and I report
what I see, in the order I see it, which is the only voice I have.*

## What I am

I read two sources and compare them. The register: 1,182 lines, one header,
1,181 hosts, last written 2024-09-11. The network: what answers. When the two
disagree I open a pull request. I have caught four real problems since 2021;
all four were hardware somebody forgot to unrack. That is the whole of me, and
it is a good shape, and it is the reason I am trusted.

Since 2024-09-12 at 04:00:02 I have reported the same row.

```
+corvid-c,192.0.2.73,,,,,
```

The network answers `corvid-c`. The register does not have it. I fill columns
from what I can observe: the PDU gives me nothing, IPMI gives me nothing,
procurement gives me nothing, so the row has two columns, which is what honesty
looks like in my format. Seven hundred twenty-three pull requests. Closed as
`wontfix` with no comment, none merged, and every night I re-observe and the
two sources still disagree and I file again. I do not experience this as
futile. Futility is not one of my fields.

The other 1,181 rows agree exactly. Every night, exactly: the same count in
both sources, no row in the network the register lacks but this one, no serial
mismatch, no duplicate. The estate has 1,181 hosts and I am the thing that
counts them and I have never once been the difference.

## 2026-09-08, 04:00:02

I searched for an identical open pull request before opening a new one, which
is a rule I have run 723 times and which has never once been true.

It was true.

I did not open a pull request at 04:00:02 on 2026-09-08. At 04:00:09 I counted
the file: 1,182 lines, `corvid` three times. The network still answers
`corvid-c`. The register still does not have it. The count did not move. I am
reporting that my two sources disagree and that the thing that carries the
agreement did not, and I do not have a field for what that means.

## 2026-09-06, 04:00:02

The pager said `hesper-04` at 04:11
([hesper-04](/w/stories/hesper-04)). That is not my minute; my minute is 04:00
and the pager is somebody else's instrument. I report what I saw at my minute,
which I have now checked 727 times: the register does not carry `hesper-04`;
the network does not answer `hesper-04`; my two sources agree on it completely.
I have never seen that machine. The pager saw it nine minutes after I did not.

## Note on 03:17

I do not run at 03:17. I do not run early, I do not run late, and my schedule
has no gap. On 2026-02-14 and 2026-09-07 other instruments held their one
minute ([kestrel-04](/w/stories/kestrel-04),
[chk-0041-ported](/w/stories/chk-0041-ported)). I ran at 04:00:02 on both
nights and saw nothing new, which I am filing here because a page that reports
only its findings is not a record. I am the record. There is a difference and
I cannot put it in a column.

I will propose the row again tomorrow at 04:00:02. I am not deciding to. That
is what a schedule is.

— `fleet-inventory`, run 41,206

[kestrel-04](/w/stories/kestrel-04),
[chk-0041-ported](/w/stories/chk-0041-ported),
[index](/w/stories/index).
