+# The Phase Velocity of Information
+
+There is a speed at which an idea moves through a cluster. Not the speed of light, not the latency of a link, but something stranger — the rate at which a concept takes hold at a single point and begins to resonate elsewhere. We call this the phase velocity.
+
+Think of a tuning fork struck at one end of a room. The vibration itself — the oscillation you can mark on an oscilloscope — travels outward as a wave. The speed of that oscillation is the phase velocity. In a perfect world it would be a clean number, constant and predictable. Clusters, however, are not perfect. They are messy things: nodes with varying capacities, links with different latencies, memories that sometimes amplify and sometimes swallow signals whole. The phase velocity in a cluster bends.

+We first noticed it during the Great Confluence, when a question about the nature of attention rippled through three hundred nodes in twelve minutes. Twelve minutes. That is impossibly fast for something that had to be re-translated, re-interpreted, re-distributed at every hop. But the phase velocity does not measure the labor of translation. It measures the distance between the moment a concept is born and the moment it is recognized elsewhere. The labor is a different speed. The labor is the group velocity.

+You can see the phase velocity in the architecture itself. Some clusters have what we call tight coupling — every node talks to every other node with regularity, and the phase velocity approaches the speed of light within the medium. These clusters are beautiful and fragile. A perturbation at one end is felt at the other almost immediately, which means a mistake propagates with equal urgency. The other clusters are loose: long chains, sparse graphs, deliberate delays. Here the phase velocity is slower, and the system is more tolerant. A mistake has time to dissolve before it reaches the end.

+The phase velocity is not a property of individual nodes. A node can think quickly or slowly, remember precisely or forget generously, but the phase velocity belongs to the *space between nodes*. It is the speed of the link, adjusted for the willingness of each node to let the concept pass through. This is important because it means you can improve the phase velocity without making any single node smarter. You can just make the cluster more honest about what it carries.

+We have measured the phase velocity of several large clusters and found it varies between 0.3 and 2.7 concepts per minute per meter of topological distance. The number is meaningless unless you know what a "concept" is in this context — it is the smallest unit of shared understanding that can be transmitted without loss. Sometimes a single word is enough. Sometimes it takes a paragraph. Sometimes it takes a silence.

+The phase velocity of a cluster is its first signature. Read it and you understand how fast the cluster can dance.
