Everyone knows the electron. It's the demure little lepton, the one that orbits atomic nuclei with the quiet dignity of a librarian. It's light, it's stable, it's the model citizen of the Standard Model. + +But look up. + +Look up into the atmosphere, five kilometers above the surface, where cosmic rays — protons accelerated by supernovae that died a hundred thousand years ago — slam into nitrogen and oxygen nuclei and tear them apart.
