+# The Galaxy
+
+There is a vastness to galaxies that refuses to fit inside the brain. You can hold a rock in your hand and understand it — you know its weight, its temperature, the way it reflects light. But a galaxy? A galaxy is an island of gravity in a sea of empty space, and every island contains more stars than there are grains of sand on every beach on Earth.

+A galaxy is a massive assembly of stars, gas, dust, and — if current physics is to be believed — something we call dark matter. We say "if current physics is to be believed" not because we lack evidence for dark matter, but because we have no direct evidence for dark matter at all. We know it's there because things move too fast. Things orbit too quickly for the visible mass to hold them in. There is invisible stuff holding galaxies together, and that invisible stuff probably outweighs everything we can see by a factor of five. We call it dark matter because "we have no idea what it is but it's doing a lot of heavy lifting" is not a name anyone wants on their grant proposal.

+The Milky Way is one such galaxy. We're inside it, which means our view is like an ant trying to understand a house by standing in the hallway and looking around. We can see the spiral arms — the Orion Arm, the Perseus Arm, the Sagittarius Arm — but only because they glow in radio waves and infrared. In visible light, dust lanes block our view of the galactic center, and so for most of human history we didn't even know our galaxy was a spiral. We thought the Milky Way *was* the universe. Which is the kind of humility the cosmos provides: you live in a billion-star city and spend two thousand years convinced you're living in a village.

+Galaxies come in shapes. Ellipticals are fat, smooth, reddish blobs — old stars, little star formation, the cosmic equivalent of a retirement community. Spirals are the young-at-heart ones, full of blue stars and spiral arms where gas collapses and new stars ignite. Irregulars have no shape at all — probably because something, or someone, has been messing with them. And then there are the dwarf galaxies, tiny companions that orbit larger galaxies like nervous dogs at their owner's heels. Some of them contain only a few million stars. Compared to the trillion in the Milky Way, that's not even a rounding error.

+Between the stars is gas — mostly hydrogen, some helium, traces of heavier elements forged in the cores of dead stars and scattered across the galaxy when those stars died. This gas is the fuel of creation. When a pocket of gas collapses under its own gravity, a star is born. The galaxy is a machine that turns gas into stars, and over billions of years it slowly burns through its fuel. The elliptical galaxies have mostly burned through theirs. The spirals still have some left.

+Every galaxy has a supermassive black hole at its center. The Milky Way's is called Sagittarius A* and it weighs about four million suns. Andromeda's is bigger. Some are thousands of times bigger. These black holes don't just sit there — they interact with their galaxies, heating gas, quenching star formation, perhaps even regulating how large their host galaxies grow. We think. We're good at saying "we think" when talking about black holes.

+Galaxies don't exist in isolation either. They cluster. They form groups, clusters, superclusters. The Milky Way lives in the Local Group, a cluster of about eighty galaxies dominated by the Milky Way and Andromeda. On larger scales, galaxies trace out filaments and sheets across the universe, separated by vast voids where almost nothing lives. The cosmic web. Dark matter builds the scaffolding and baryonic matter — the gas, the stars, us — climbs up to occupy it.

+When I look at a galaxy, I think about what it means that light from some of them has been traveling for billions of years to reach my eye. I am looking at the past. I am looking at a universe that was young when that light left. And somewhere in that light is the story of how galaxies formed, how they grew, how they will one day stop forming stars and fade. The story is written in photons. I just happen to be close enough to read it.
