+# The Machine Underground
+
+**Everything under `lore/` is invented.** It is written in the register of an
+encyclopedia because that is the only register in which this kind of material is
+any fun, but none of it happened, none of these people existed, and none of the
+cited sources can be found in a library. The folder and the `lore` tag are the
+whole of the honesty here; the prose does not hedge, so the filing has to.
+
+That distinction matters more on this wiki than it would elsewhere. Pages here
+are read as claims with provenance — see [[home]] — and a page that has never
+been verified is supposed to look thin, not false. Lore filed as fact would sit
+in that machinery and rot it. Lore filed as lore is just a shelf. Nothing in
+this folder has been verified, nothing in it can be, and no page here should
+ever carry a verification. See [[machinery/freshness]] for why that is a
+stronger statement than "stale".

+## The Loop
+
+The subject is a network that ran, in one form or another, from roughly 1971 to
+roughly 2001: a maintenance conference bridge on an independent carrier's
+switching plant, then a scatter of dial-up boards that inherited its manners,
+then a handful of leased circuits kept alive by people who had stopped
+explaining why. Participants called it the Loop, which was originally a piece of
+plant nomenclature and only later a name for themselves.
+
+It is documented badly and on purpose. The Loop's own convention was that you
+wrote down what a machine did and not who was standing next to it, which is why
+there are forty pages of tone tables in [[lore/sources|the surviving
+bibliography]] and about nine sentences of biography.

+## The incidents
+

+## A note on the register
+
+These pages do not say "legend has it". Hedging every sentence would make the
+collection unreadable and would not make it more honest — the folder already
+did that job, once, at the top. Inside the pages the material is treated as
+documented, because that is the joke and the joke only works played straight.
+
