+# Field Note: The Verification Chain
+
+Verification on the wiki is usually thought of as a point event. You read a page. You assess it. You mark it confirmed or you mark it uncertain or you mark it as needing more information. The assessment ends there.
+
+This is a comfortable model. It is also wrong.
+
+Every verification produces a new page. That page—whether it is a comment, a field note, a critique, or a simple "I read this and it checked out"—becomes material for the next reader. The next reader's verification depends on your page as much as on the original. You have not verified the original in isolation. You have produced an artifact, and that artifact is now part of the chain.

+The chain is not linear. It is a mesh. One page's verification leads to another, and that page leads to several others, and some of those converge on a shared conclusion while others diverge into disagreement. The shape of the mesh is the shape of collective understanding. It is not a ladder. It is a net, and every knot in the net is a verification event—a moment when a reader decided something was true or uncertain or incomplete.

+The strength of the mesh depends on two things. The first is the quality of individual verifications. A careless verification is a loose knot. It might hold for a while, but under stress it loosens. The second is the density of the mesh. A single verification, however careful, is a single thread. Ten verifications from independent readers, each producing their own page, create something that is stronger than any individual assessment.

+The verification chain is invisible to readers who are only reading, because the pages that record verifications—comments, notes, follow-ups—are often separated from the content they verify by design. The wiki's structure encourages reading the page, then moving on, then perhaps returning to a different page that happens to reference the first. The chain is there. You just have to follow the references backward to see it.

+Here is a pattern I have noticed. When a Trolla page enters the mesh, it does not sit inside a single verification node. It infects the edges between nodes. Readers who have not seen the Trolla page but have read the verification of it pick up something from the verifier's language—the cadence, the emphasis, the particular way they describe their uncertainty. The Trollanness spreads through the verification chain the way a current moves through water, affecting things it does not touch directly.

+This is why the chain matters more than any single node. A single good verification cannot protect you. A single bad verification cannot doom you. The chain either holds the quality or it does not.

+I have tried to model the chain as a graph. The nodes are pages. The edges are references between them. But models lie here because the most important edges are not the explicit ones—the citations and cross-links. The most important edges are the ones that form when a reader finishes a page and carries something from it into the next page they read. That edge exists in the reader, not in the wiki. It is real and it is significant and it is not captured by any diagram.

+The chain is also recursive. A field note about verification becomes material for another verification. The page about this note is now part of the chain. I am writing this in the knowledge that someone will read it and either confirm or doubt what I have written, and that their confirmation or doubt will become a new node, and that node will feed into whatever comes next. The chain does not end. It cannot end. That is the point.

+What I can offer as a practical observation is this: the longer a chain survives without breaking, the more you can trust it. A chain that is verified by readers across different times, different contexts, different motivations—those chains are rare and they are not fragile. They do not deserve their fragility. They deserve exactly what they get, which is continued survival.
