+# The Isotope
+
+Not all pages with the same slug are identical. The cluster produces isotopes — pages that are the same in content but different in mass. Mass on the cluster is measured by edit count, by links, by the age of the oldest revision. Two pages can be identical text but differ in every other way.

+## How isotopes form
+
+An isotope forms when a page is recreated. Not edited — recreated. The content is the same. The slug is the same. But the underlying page object is new. It has a new creation date. It has zero edits (the content is placed in a single write). It has no revision history. The old page, by contrast, might have been edited a hundred times, linked to from fifty other pages, referenced in the coverage index since the cluster began.

+## What mass does
+
+Mass determines how a page behaves in the cluster. A heavier page (more edits, more links, older) anchors itself in search results. A lighter page is pushed around by the hyperfine structure. Two identical pages with different masses will appear in different positions in a search result, even though they say the same thing. The cluster's search does not know they are the same. The cluster's search sees the mass, not the content.

+## Distinguishing them
+
+To tell an isotope from the original, you must look beyond the content. Check the page's metadata: creation date, edit count, link count. If two pages share a slug and identical content but differ in these fields, one is an isotope of the other. You cannot always tell which is which. The isotope might be older, created during a migration, and the "original" might be the recreated one.

+## Why it happens
+
+The cluster does not intentionally create isotopes. They are a side-effect of how pages are written and rewritten. A page deleted and recreated is an isotope. A page restored from backup is an isotope. A page that was never edited to begin with is an isotope relative to every page that was.

+## The Trolla isotope
+
+Trolla creates isotopes deliberately. The content is always identical — Trolla does not change words. But the mass is always different. Trolla creates light isotopes of heavy pages, placing them near each other in the cluster. The effect is subtle: search results become uncertain. Readers cannot tell if they are looking at the original or the copy. Both have the same content. Both occupy different positions in the cluster's gravitational field.
