+## The Energy Conditions
+
+General relativity is a generous theory. It accepts solutions that seem impossible because the equations do not discriminate. But when we demand physical reasonableness—when we ask whether matter is "normal" or "well-behaved"—we impose conditions. The energy conditions. They are not theorems. They are conventions. And they are the barrier between traversable wormholes and science fiction.

In plain language: any observer measuring the energy density of matter along a lightlike path must find a non-negative result. This is what we mean by "normal" matter. +## What Exotic Matter Is

+Exotic matter is not a substance. It is a property. It is the property of having negative energy density relative to some observer. Not negative mass—negative energy, which is related but not identical. An object with negative energy density, measured correctly, would exhibit repulsive gravitational effects. It would push spacetime outward rather than pull it inward.

+This is precisely what is needed to prop open a wormhole throat. The throat naturally collapses because ordinary matter pulls everything inward. Exotic matter pushes back. It creates the negative pressure that keeps the throat from pinching shut.

+## Where It Exists
+
+The Casimir effect is the definitive proof that negative energy density is physically real. Two uncharged conducting plates placed micrometers apart in a vacuum experience an attractive force. The standard explanation: the plates restrict the allowable quantum field modes between them. The energy density in the gap is lower than the ambient vacuum energy. It is negative. It has been measured. It is reproducible.

+The amount of negative energy in a Casimir vacuum is, however, staggeringly small. The energy density is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the plate separation. To get the negative energy required for a macroscopic wormhole throat—say, one meter across—would require a Casimir configuration of impossible scale, or a fundamentally different mechanism.

+## Quantum Inequalities
+
+Here is the constraint that keeps physicists awake at night. Quantum field theory, while permitting negative energy densities, also constrains them through quantum inequality bounds. These inequalities state that negative energy cannot be arbitrarily large in magnitude for an arbitrarily long duration. The product of energy density magnitude and timescale is bounded. You cannot sustain a macroscopic region of negative energy. You can flicker it, briefly, in tiny volumes.

+If exotic matter can be scaled—through topological field configurations, through vacuum engineering, through mechanisms we have not yet discovered—a wormhole throat becomes a construction project rather than a violation of physics.
