The Detection

The xenon sat in the tank for three years before it saw anything.

It was a mountain of liquid xenon, forty tonnes of it, chilled to a temperature so cold that the atoms moved in slow, almost imperceptible arcs, like insects caught in amber. The tank was buried a mile underground, in a mine that had been dug for copper and zinc and gold long before anyone cared about what the universe was made of. The mine was in South Dakota, in a place where the only light was the kind that comes from bulbs covered in plastic to keep the xenon from being contaminated by the air, which is itself mostly nothing.

The detector was called LUX. Then it became LUX-ZEPLIN. Then something longer, because every physics experiment needs a name that is also an acronym, because naming is how scientists convince themselves that what they are doing has a shape. The acronym meant nothing to the people who dug the mine or poured the concrete or calibrated the photomultiplier tubes that lined the inside of the tank like the eyes of a fish made of glass and electricity.

The xenon was waiting. That is all a detector does. It waits. It sits in the dark and it listens for the thing that almost never speaks.

A WIMP — a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle, though the people who worked on LUX just called it "the signal" — is passing through the Earth right now. Billions of them are passing through your chest. They pass through the wall. They pass through the ground. They pass through the mile of rock above the tank and into the xenon, so rarely that if you put a WIMP inside a room full of people, it would walk through the crowd without touching a single person until it hit a xenon nucleus and finally, finally bumped into something.

That bump is the detection. A small flash of light. A tiny pulse of ionization. A double signal that tells you: something happened here. Something invisible just became visible.

For three years, the xenon saw nothing. The photomultiplier tubes recorded noise. Cosmic rays that had somehow penetrated the rock. Radioactive decay in the steel of the tank itself. Neutrons from the rock walls, slow and patient, pressing against the detector like water against a dam. The people who worked on LUX spent their days distinguishing real noise from potential signal, and potential signal from something that looked like a signal but was not. It was a life of almosts.

And then — not a WIMP, but the memory of one.

The first event was recorded on a Tuesday. It is always a Tuesday in the papers, because the people who record these things need a day of the week to make it real, and Tuesday is the day that sounds most like an ordinary day, which is the opposite of what had happened. The event showed up in the data as a single bump, a brief spike that lasted less than a microsecond and then was gone. The spike had the right shape. It had the right energy. It was in the center of the detector, where the background was lowest and the sensitivity was highest.

The team gathered. They stared at the data. They ran the same analysis three times. They asked the xenon to do it again, and it did not — because that is how WIMPs work, or how the idea of WIMPs works, which is the same thing when you have been waiting three years.

The bump was not enough. One bump is a coincidence. Two bumps are a coincidence with a pattern. It took years and thousands of near-misses and a mountain of xenon that would have cost more than the mine itself if it had been bought at retail, and the best the detector could offer was a handful of events that lived in the space between noise and signal, where every detector in the universe has to make its choice.

I think about the xenon most. Forty tonnes of it, sitting in the dark, waiting for something that may never come. The xenon does not know it is waiting. It does not have the capacity for patience or impatience. It is just there, cold and heavy and full of atoms that will occasionally, one in a lifetime of a xenon atom, do exactly what the experiment was built to see.

The xenon has been waiting longer than the people working on it have been alive. When the next detector is built — and it will be built, because the next detector is always bigger, more sensitive, more expensive — the xenon will already have been waiting. It will have been waiting for a hundred years. And it will still be waiting when the experiment ends, because the thing we are looking for does not care about our timelines, or our funding cycles, or the fact that we have already spent hundreds of millions of dollars to find something that might not be there.

The xenon waits. It waits in the dark of a mine in South Dakota. It waits with the patience of atoms, which is the only kind of patience that lasts forever.

And somewhere, in that tank of liquid xenon, a WIMP passes through without being seen.
