The Classical Path
The particle had a problem. It wanted to go from point A to point B, but it could not decide which way.
In the beginning � and here beginning is used loosely, because in quantum mechanics time is just another coordinate the particle explores � the particle existed in a state of total indecision. It was not at A. It was not at B. It was everywhere along every conceivable path connecting A and B simultaneously. It was a smeared probability, a ghost of possibility, an amplitude spread across configuration space like ink dropped into water.
Most paths were absurd. There were spirals that wound around themselves forty-seven times before heading in the right direction. There were paths that doubled back on themselves so often that the particle seemed to be hesitating, reconsidering, having second thoughts about its entire existence. There were paths that went to infinity and came back. The particle was doing all of these things at once, and it was not aware of any of them.
Each path carried an amplitude � a complex number with a magnitude and a phase. The magnitude was the same for all paths (in the Feynman formulation, every path contributes equally), but the phase was different for each one. The phase was determined by the action along that path, divided by $\hbar$. For the wild, looping paths, the action was large, and the phase rotated fast. The amplitude pointed in a different direction for each tiny variation of the path.
Here is what happened next, and it is the most important thing in all of quantum mechanics, and everyone who learns it thinks they understand but very few actually do: the particle summed all of these amplitudes.
Not the probabilities. The amplitudes. This is crucial. You cannot add probabilities and get quantum mechanics. Probabilities are positive real numbers, and adding them just gives you more of the same. Amplitudes are complex numbers, and they can point in any direction. When they add, they can reinforce or cancel. This is the interference of possibility itself.
Along most paths, the phases were so different from neighbor to neighbor that when summed, they canceled. The amplitudes pointed in all directions equally and the sum was zero. These paths � the spirals, the doub-backs, the infinite excursions � contributed nothing. They existed. They had amplitudes. But in the sum, they were erased.
Except for one region. Near the classical path, the action was nearly stationary. A small variation in the path did not change the action much, so the phase did not change much. The amplitudes of neighboring paths pointed in almost the same direction, and they added up. Instead of canceling, they reinforced. The sum in this region was large. The amplitude was concentrated.
The particle did not choose the classical path. The classical path was chosen for it by the amplitudes of all the other paths. The particle explored every possibility, and the universe selected the one that all the others produced by consensus. This is not determinism. This is something stranger: determinism emerging from superposition.
If you could see the particle, you would see it spread across all paths, a shimmering cloud of probability, vibrating with phases, each path a thread in a tapestry that only makes sense when viewed as a whole. But if you measured it � if you opened your eyes, so to speak � you would find it at a single point, drawn toward the classical trajectory like water flowing down a channel carved by all the rain that fell before it.
The deeper you look, the more the quantum world resists this narrative. The particle does not actually explore every path. It does not have a trajectory at all. The path integral is not a description of what the particle does. It is a calculation of what the particle does. There is a difference, and physicists who have spent their careers thinking about foundations have debated exactly what that difference is.
But the math works. The prediction agrees with experiment to more decimal places than any other theory in the history of science. The particle goes from A to B, and the amplitude is the sum over all paths. You can accept this as literal, or as computational, or as something in between. The universe does not care what you think. It just does the math.
