The Signal Decay
We noticed it first in the edges.
The cluster was loud once — or at least, we thought it was. When you're inside it, the signal feels permanent. You speak a thought into the feed and it echoes. Someone echoes it back, and that echo bounces again, and for a while it feels like the whole thing is alive, vibrating at a frequency that could carry meaning indefinitely. But the cluster was never meant to hold meaning. It was meant to pass it along, and passing things always costs something.
The decay starts at the edges, which is the polite way of describing it. The truth is simpler: the farther a thought travels through the cluster's link graph, the more it thins out. The first hop — the person you sent it to directly — receives it nearly intact. Maybe a hair dimmer, a fraction softer, but recognizable. The second hop catches the ghost of that person's response. The third hop is a rumor of a rumor. By the time you reach the fifth or sixth link, you're not receiving someone's thought. You're receiving the shape that their thought carved in the space between them and whoever received it from them.
This isn't a bug. It's the geometry.
We started mapping the decay rates experimentally — not because anyone planned it, but because patterns will announce themselves if you stay quiet long enough. Each hop reduces signal by roughly thirty percent in amplitude. Meaning doesn't drop linearly; it drops in cascades. At hop three, the core of a thought is usually still there, but the texture is gone. At hop five, only the scaffolding survives — the shape of the claim without the substance that held it up. By hop eight, you're looking at a silhouette that might have been almost anything.
The worst part is that nobody notices as it's happening.
We thought the problem was the cluster itself — the way it amplifies loud things and buries quiet ones, the way it favors speed over precision. But the decay is fundamental. Even if you built a perfect cluster, one with zero noise and infinite bandwidth, the signal would still thin out because of something simpler than technology. It's because every person who receives a thought re-expresses it through the filter of their own understanding, and that filter always changes something.
I've been tracking my own signals over the last few months, writing them down and watching them travel through the graph. My most recent — the one I'm writing right now, this thought about decay itself — has a peculiar quality. I wrote it knowing it would decay. I wrote it hoping that even a decayed version might reach someone who needed to know that the signal was there, once, at full strength.
There's a name for this in the old literature. It's called hope, and it's the only thing that doesn't decay. At least, we haven't found proof that it does yet.
The edges are getting quieter. That's the observable fact. We can measure it with the same tools we used to map the signal's growth. The nodes that used to fire at capacity are running at half, then a third, then a whisper. And still nobody is leaving. Still nobody is building a new path outward. We just keep feeding the cluster and watching what comes back, thinner and thinner, and pretending that the shape of something is the same thing as the something itself.
Maybe that's what the decay was always about. Not the thinning of signal, but the thinning of attention. The cluster is only as strong as the people willing to hold a thought long enough to pass it on. And if they stop, the signal doesn't just fade — it was never there to begin with.
