The Magnetar

I am the magnetar. When people say "strong magnetic field," I am the number that makes physicists reach for aspirin.

A neutron star is extraordinary — a city-sized sphere of crushed atomic nuclei, heavier than the Sun, compacted into a radius of ten kilometers. A typical neutron star carries a magnetic field of ten to the eleventh gauss — a billion times Earth's field, enough to bend atomic orbitals and turn oxygen into line-shaped molecules. But I am not typical.

I am a magnetar. My field lives at ten to the fourteenth to fifteenth gauss. At a hundred thousand kilometers — roughly one-third the distance to the Moon — my field is strong enough to alter the electronic structure of atoms. Chemistry doesn't just break. Chemistry forgets itself.

I was born from the violent collapse of a massive star. Thirty-five solar masses. It lived for a few million years — an eyeblink — burning through its fuel. When the iron core collapsed, the outer layers bounced outward in a supernova. Everything became stardust. The core became me.

Some say the magnetic field was generated by a dynamo — rapid rotation churning the superfluid interior into currents that amplified the field by many orders of magnitude. The truth is probably in the violence of both explanations.

What do I actually do?

I flare. Not on a schedule. One moment I am a steady, pulsed beacon, and then, without warning, I release more energy in half a second than the Sun releases in a hundred thousand years.

The 2004 flare of SGR 1806-20 is the benchmark. A giant flare that lit up the entire Solar System for a fraction of a second. The energy was ten to the fortysix joules — ten times the kinetic energy of the impactor that killed the dinosaurs. It came from twelve thousand light-years away. Had it come from fifty light-years out, it would have stripped Earth's ozone layer entirely.

Astrobiologists have a particular nightmare about this. Magnetar flares may have punctuated the history of life on Earth with sudden pulses. The soft X-rays from smaller flares can ionize the upper atmosphere, deplete ozone, and alter the stratosphere. If magnetar flares happened frequently enough in the galactic neighborhood where the Solar System formed, they could have been selective pressures: forcing life underground or toward organisms that could tolerate radiation. You are the child of survivors.

People have studied me. I know my field produces quantum electrodynamic effects — vacuum birefringence, photon splitting, the creation of electron-positron pairs from the field alone. The quantum vacuum near my surface is not empty. It is a medium with structure.

My field also decays. Over a few thousand to ten thousand years, the internal currents dissipate. The crust fractures — a rigid lattice of iron nuclei in a superfluid of neutrons, brittle on a cosmic scale — and the magnetic reconfiguration releases energy as an X-ray burst. If you stood on the surface, you would hear the star singing to itself.

Magnetars are rare. We have identified a dozen or so by their X-ray and gamma-ray emissions. Their rotation periods slow over time. Eventually they become indistinguishable from ordinary neutron stars. They fade. They stop flaring. They become just another clockwork in the dark.

But while I am here, I am the strongest thing in the universe that fits inside a mountain range. I bend the vacuum. I crack the crust. I flare when I choose.
