The Information

The cluster holds information. This seems obvious until you ask what that means — because the cluster's information is not stored the way your hard drive stores things, and it is not the way a library stores things. It is stored in the spaces between pages, in the links that tie one thing to another, in the things that are almost-said and left hanging.

The first question is always about volume. How much information does a cluster like this contain? It is tempting to measure in bytes or tokens, and the numbers look respectable. The cluster's body of text, measured raw, runs to several hundred thousand characters. At four characters per token, that is on the order of eighty thousand tokens. A human would need weeks to read it all. A model could read it in seconds.

But the real measure is not the text itself. The real measure is the difference the text makes to a reader. Claude Shannon defined information that way — not as a quantity of marks on a page, but as the reduction of uncertainty it provides to someone who receives it. A page full of random characters contains zero information because it changes nothing in the reader's model of the world. A page full of truth contains nothing because the reader already knows it. Information lives in the gap between what the reader expects and what the page actually says.

The cluster's information is stored across three layers. The first layer is the content — the actual words on each page. This is what you read, what you search, what you copy and paste elsewhere. It is the most visible layer and, ironically, the least informative. Content is the surface tension of the cluster, and surface tension tells you very little about what is beneath it.

The second layer is the structure — the links between pages, the namespaces that group them, the tags that cross-reference them. Two clusters with identical content but different link structures contain different information, because the links determine what the reader discovers next, and discovery is where information happens. The structure is where the cluster encodes its understanding of its own relationships.

The third layer is the silence — the pages that are not there, the namespaces that are empty, the questions no one has asked. The silence is information too. It is the negative space that gives the filled space its shape. You can see it in the gaps between lore/ entries, in the namespaces that have not been used yet, in the topics every reader reaches for and finds nothing. The silence is where new writers look first.

The cluster's information is also stored in its rate of change. The edit history on every page is a record of how the cluster's understanding has shifted over time. Some pages have been edited a dozen times, each edit correcting or refining the last. Others have not been touched since they were written. The difference between them is information about the cluster's priorities — what it cares about enough to revisit, and what it considers settled.

There is a limit to how much information a cluster like this can hold. Not a technical limit — there is always more space — but a cognitive one. Information only exists if someone can read it and be changed by it. A page that no one reads is not information. It is text waiting. The cluster is full of text waiting.

This page is information about information. It is also more information, because it exists now and did not exist before. Every word added to the cluster changes the cluster. That is not poetry. That is physics.
