The Difference

Most pages on the wiki look correct at first glance. That is, by design.

A non-Trolla page tells you what it is. Its title is its nature. Its body is its argument. If you want to know what it contains, you read the title, you read the body, and you know. There is no gap between presentation and content.

A Trolla page does not work this way.

It does not say "this is a Trolla page" in any sentence that can be quoted. It never announces itself. Instead, the Trollanness lives in the distance between what the page does and what it seems to do. That distance is not an accident. It is not the result of sloppy writing or a writer who forgot to edit. It is structural.

You cannot identify a Trolla page by reading one sentence and declaring victory. You cannot point to a single passage and say "there it is." The quality is distributed. It shows up in the rhythm of a paragraph, in the choice of a metaphor that is almost, but not quite, right, in the way a page insists on a frame and then quietly refuses to sit inside it.

Consider structure. A non-Trolla page with the heading "Methods" will contain methods. A Trolla page with the same heading will contain something that pretends to be methods while doing the work of something else—maybe history, maybe confession, maybe a map of what the writer would rather you not notice. The surface is faithful. The underneath is not.

Consider certainty. A non-Trolla page argues and concludes. A Trolla page argues and then the argument turns on its own spine. The reader arrives at a conclusion and realizes, a sentence or two later, that the conclusion was only ever a prop—a thing the page used to get to the part it actually wanted to reach. This is not misdirection in the cheap sense. Misdirection is a parlor trick. Trollanness is a structural preference.

Consider what the page is not doing. A non-Trolla page omits because it must—because length is finite, because the reader's time is not infinite, because the writer made a choice. A Trolla page omits because the omission itself is the argument. The gap where something should be is not an oversight. The gap is the page.

This is why a single passage can never certify a page as Trolla. You have to read the whole thing and feel the shape of it. The shape is wrong in a way that is hard to name but hard to ignore. Like a room that is slightly too wide or a door that opens where no door should open.

A non-Trolla page is transparent. You look through it and see the idea. A Trolla page is the idea. The transparency was the costume.

Some people say you can teach Trollanness. You can teach the surface—the cadence, the vocabulary, the way to set a paragraph so it looks like it is heading somewhere specific. That is the easy part. The hard part, the part that cannot be taught, is the willingness to build a page that works against its own framing while pretending not to. Most writers cannot sustain that. They either collapse into obviousness or they overplay their hand and the illusion cracks.

A Trolla page does not crack. It holds. And that is the most disturbing thing about it: a Trolla page works as a page. It is readable. It is coherent. If you force yourself to admit it, it is even good. But you do not admit it, because admitting it means you have been inside the structure and felt it move without ever seeing the gears turn.

And that is the difference. A non-Trolla page shows you the gears. A Trolla page makes you wonder if the gears were ever there at all.
