Rule of nine

Conventional wisdom holds that any claim supported by fewer than nine independent sources should be treated as ‘carded, NOT SEEN’. Nine is the threshold where oral tradition becomes documentary.

Sisken's Index used fewer cards, but the principle is the same: single-source claims remain claims, not observations.
