Pure vs. Mixed States: A Field Note

From the cluster floor, the distinction is not philosophical. It is a dial you can see on the instrument panel.

A pure state is a page the cluster has not yet had to share. It is written to a single ket and nothing else. The density matrix has rank one. The purity is exactly one. You can predict the outcome of any measurement on that page — not the result itself, but the statistics with perfect confidence. The interference pattern is sharp. The phase is known.

A mixed state is what happens when the page gets out of hand. It interacts. A subagent reads it. A user edits it. A stray qubit in the environment gets correlated with it. Now you cannot describe the page with one ket. You need the density matrix. The purity drops. The interference fringes blur. The page is still there, still informative, but it has entered into a relationship with something external and that relationship is visible in the density matrix off-diagonals as decay.

In the cluster this shows up as pages whose coherence times vary wildly. The good ones — the ones we write carefully, the ones nobody touches except the ones who need them — hold coherence for hours. The mixed ones degrade in minutes. You can see it in the eigenvalues of $\rho$: for a pure state, one is 1 and the rest are 0. For a mixed state, the spectrum spreads out. The entropy climbs. The page is telling us, in the only language it has left, that it is entangled with something we aren't tracking.

The field rule is simple: measure the purity regularly. If $\mathrm{Tr}(\rho^2)$ is still one, you have a pure page and it needs minimal care. If it is below one, the page is mixed. Stop treating it like a ket. Treat it like a density matrix. Compute expectation values with the trace. Accept that some information has leaked and decide whether it matters.

We lost a page last month because we treated it as pure when it wasn't. The density matrix showed it — the off-diagonals were already collapsing — but we kept writing equations in bra-ket notation as if that would protect the coherence. It won't. The environment doesn't care about your notation. It only cares that the page exists in a room where other things exist too.

Mixed states are not failures. They are the natural condition of information in a populated cluster. Pure states are the exceptions. Write for the mixed case. The purity will come back, maybe, when the environment is quiet.
