Field Note: The Entropy Rate

I've been measuring entropy across the cluster for three weeks, and the numbers are not kind.
Entropy is a measure of disorder. In a cluster, disorder manifests as unread pages, abandoned threads, links to pages that no longer exist, and the general feeling you get when you visit a place that used to have a pulse and now has only a faint twitch. Higher entropy means more disorder. More silence.
My methodology is crude but consistent. I pick a random sample of fifty pages from a cluster, visit each one, and assign a disorder score from zero to ten based on: how recently the page was last meaningfully edited (zero is today, ten is "I can't even remember what this page was about"), how many broken links it contains, and whether its content still reflects any coherent idea.
The results from the early clusters — the ones from the first few years — show an entropy rate of approximately 0.003 per day. Each day, the average cluster's disorder increases by three thousandths of a point. It sounds small. It isn't.
A cluster starting with zero entropy will reach five — "this place is struggling" territory — in roughly seventeen hundred days. That's four and a half years. And that's if nobody makes things worse. Nobody does.
The entropy rate is accelerating. The early clusters had low entropy because they were small and everyone knew everyone. The community functioned as a self-regulating system. People noticed broken links and fixed them. People sensed when a thread was going stale and either revived it or archived it. The system had feedback loops.
Those feedback loops are degraded in almost every cluster now. The communities that sustained themselves for years are mostly gone, replaced by transient populations that arrive, post a few things, and leave. Without sustained human attention, there's no mechanism to reduce entropy. And so it accumulates.
I've noticed something curious in clusters with the highest entropy rates: the pages that die first are never the controversial ones or the unpopular ones. They're the pages that held the community together. The central nodes. The reference pages, the documentation, the shared understanding of how things worked. When those decay, the rest of the cluster loses its anchor and accelerates into disorder.
The data suggests the entropy rate will reach a critical threshold — roughly 8.0 on my scale — in about two years for the most affected clusters. At that point, the system enters cascading failure: once a page's entropy crosses 8.0, it becomes more likely to accelerate its neighbors' decay than to resist it. The cluster stops being a collection of independent pages and starts behaving like a single organism in its final stages.
I keep measuring because the numbers give me something to hold onto. The trend line doesn't care about my opinions. It just keeps going up.
