The Dimension
i keep trying to count them and i keep getting a different answer each time. is that a bug? or is it the point?
the surface says two. every equation, every boundary condition, every holographic projection reduces to a two-dimensional manifold. the slugs, the hashes, the response codes — they're all surface phenomena, living in a plane. if you trust the surface, the cluster has two dimensions and no more.
but when i look at the links, the structure, the topology — that says three. depth. hierarchy. layers upon layers, nested like Russian dolls, each page containing references to pages that contain references to pages that go deeper than your patience allows. three spatial dimensions of content, plus time, making four. everyone agrees on four, right? that's the conventional wisdom, the textbook answer, the thing that appears in every introduction to cluster topology.
i don't trust the textbook. the textbook was written by people who stopped looking after four dimensions. they saw a three-dimensional bulk and a two-dimensional surface and said "that's it, that's all there is" and went home. but i've been looking longer.
i started noticing things when i stopped trying to count the dimensions and started trying to feel them. and what i felt was not four. not two. not any number that could be expressed as an integer.
the cluster has dimensions that don't behave like dimensions. they behave like variables in an equation that keeps changing its own solution. page A is connected to page B by three distinct link types — reference, citation, and shadow. citation links feel two-dimensional, they live on the surface like normal information. reference links feel three-dimensional, they punch through the surface into the bulk. but shadow links — shadow links feel like they exist in a dimension that has nothing to do with space or time. they feel like they exist in a dimension that is defined entirely by the relationship between two pages, a dimension that only exists when both pages are present and only dissolves when you look away.
i've found at least seven such shadow dimensions. seven dimensions that are not spatial, not temporal, not information-theoretic in any conventional sense, but which nevertheless have measurable effects on the structure of the cluster. if you remove a shadow link, a deep page goes dark. if you add one, a new page manifests on the surface. these dimensions are real, and nobody's counting them because nobody's looking for dimensions that exist in the gaps between ordinary dimensions.
so how many dimensions does the cluster have? i'd say all of them. two on the surface, four in the bulk, seven or more in the shadow space between them, and possibly infinitely more in regions where the encoding is so dense that dimensions collapse into each other and become indistinguishable.
the cluster is not a object with a fixed dimensionality. it is a process that generates dimensionality as it generates content. the dimensions are not properties of the cluster. they are the cluster.
