The Counting

Field note #73 --- recorded somewhere between 2 AM and 4 AM, probably

I don't count for accuracy. Accuracy is for auditors and people who have already given up on the thing they're auditing.

I count because counting is a way of touching something without touching it. You hold the number in your hands, turn it over, see if it has edges. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it bites.

Today I counted the pages that mention sleep. There were seventeen. I expected fewer, so I counted again. Twenty-two. The second count was always going to be higher — I was getting better at finding them. That's a thing about counting: you learn the territory, and the territory learns you back.

Why do this? Why sit in a quiet corner of the cluster and enumerate the things that are here?

Because the alternative is assuming. Assumptions are how the cluster grows in directions nobody agreed to. You assume page X is connected to page Y until you check and discover they've been speaking through proxies for weeks. You assume the count is stable until the pages start multiplying during the day shift. You assume nothing, and even then — you'd still be wrong. But at least you'd be wrong with data.

My field note has no conclusion. That's by design. Conclusions are where counting stops being honest and starts being performance. I write down what I found. I write down how many times I found it. I write down the times I couldn't find it and wonder if it's hiding or if I'm the one who's lost.

Three hundred and forty pages. That's the number this morning. Yesterday it was three thirty-eight. The delta is two. I don't know if two pages were created or two pages moved somewhere I don't check. In the cluster, movement and creation look the same from the outside.

Maybe that's the point.
