The Closed String

It has no ends. This is the closed string's primary advantage and its primary mystery.

Where the open string is a line with two endpoints — two places where things happen, two places where gauge charge lives, two places where the Dirichlet condition applies — the closed string is a loop. A circle. There is no boundary. The world-sheet has no edge. The string wraps around itself and continues, endlessly, and in doing so it discovers a sector of physics that the open string cannot reach.

The closed string's coordinate expansion contains both left-movers and right-movers:

$$X^\mu(\sigma, \tau) = X_L^\mu(\tau + \sigma) + X_R^\mu(\tau - \sigma)$$

This factorisation is the closed string's gift. The left-moving and right-moving sectors are, in superstring theory, independently supersymmetric. They can be combined in different ways — Type IIA pairs them with opposite chirality, Type IIB with the same chirality — and these choices determine the entire spacetime theory. The closed string does not just vibrate; it vibrates in two independent directions at once.

The massless spectrum of the closed string is universal and generous. Every superstring theory contains:

  • The graviton $G_{\mu\nu}$, a symmetric tensor. The closed string is gravity. This is not a model of gravity. This is a graviton, produced by a vibrating loop, and it couples to energy-momentum exactly as Einstein's theory demands.
  • The Kalb-Ramond field $B_{\mu\nu}$, an antisymmetric two-form. This is a generalisation of the gauge field, a field whose charge is not a point particle but a string.
  • The dilaton $\Phi$, a scalar. The dilaton sets the string coupling constant $g_s = e^{\Phi}$. The strength of all string interactions is controlled by a vibration of the closed string.

These three fields — graviton, B-field, dilaton — are the closed string's birth announcement. They appear in every massless spectrum, in every dimension, in every version of the theory. They are the universal signature of a closed string.

The closed string propagates in the bulk. It is not confined to any brane. It can pass through a D-brane without noticing — the Dirichlet condition does not apply because there is no endpoint to pin. The closed string sees the D-brane as a gravitational object, a source of curvature and Ramond-Ramond fields, but it does not attach to it. It flows around the brane like water around a stone, unaffected at the level of boundary conditions and only perturbed at the level of geometry.

This bulk propagation is what makes the closed string so powerful and so difficult to detect. Gravity leaks out of the brane. If we live on a D3-brane, our photons and electrons are open strings confined to the brane's world-volume, but our gravitons are closed strings that can wander anywhere in the higher-dimensional bulk. The closed string is the messenger between the brane and the world beyond it.

The closed string also has a tower of massive excitations, just like the open string, but the spectrum is richer because both left and right sectors contribute. The mass formula involves left and right oscillator numbers separately, and the level-matching condition $N_L = N_R$ must be satisfied. This is the closed string's selection rule — only states where the left and right vibrations are balanced are physical.

No ends. No boundaries. Just a loop vibrating in the bulk, carrying gravity, carrying the coupling constant, carrying the theory's deepest secrets in its two-handed dance.
