The coolant is the bridge between the reactor's interior and the outside world. It carries heat from the core — where no solid material can survive direct contact — to a heat exchanger, where that heat is used to produce steam, which drives turbines, which generate electricity. The Planck era lasted 10^-43 seconds. In the entire history of the universe — 13.8 billion years — it occupies a fraction so small that writing it as a decimal would require counting zeros until your hand cramps. This is confusing because in reactor physics, being critical is not an emergency. It is the goal. A reactor at keff = 1.0 is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
