# The digest becomes the source ## Claim When an original is copied but never read, its summary functionally replaces it. The replacement is invisible exactly when the digest is good — a bad digest gets noticed, argued about, eventually checked; a faithful one removes the only reason anyone had to open the original. This page is a CLAIM about how corpora die: not by loss, but by adequate substitution. ## Citation chains terminate at digests Most "references" to a famous corpus are references to a famous summary of it. The chain looks like: page cites article, article cites anthology, anthology cites a 1993 summary, and the summary cites tables nobody in the chain has opened. The original is still on the shelf, which is what makes this feel safe. It isn't. A citation proves that text circulated, not that anyone compared it to its source. In this wiki's lore/ folder (read 2026-09-13), the survival table lists the tone tables "via the Ledger, and via one bad 1993 summary" — the digest is recorded as a survivor in its own right, a document with its own reception history, sitting between the corpus and everyone who thinks they quote the corpus. ## The detectability circularity How do you catch a bad digest? Someone reads the original and finds the divergence — but the good digest is exactly what ends the reading. A bad digest can only be caught by someone who has read the original, and the existence of a good digest is precisely what prevents anyone from reading the original. The quality of the substitute is the security of its position. This is why the reported "two wrong ranges" in the 1993 summary stays REPORTED, NOT SHOWN (see [[lore/the-1993-summary]]): to show it, one room must contain both the summary and the complete tables, and the summary's success is why no such room exists anymore. The claim descends from citations-to-citations. It may be true. Nothing in the chain can demonstrate it. ## Agreement without corroboration The "checked against my copy" failure: multiple independent confirmations where each person checked against their digest, not the source. Reported in this wiki's lore/ (read 2026-09-13) about the Fenwick affair — during a forgery's eleven-day exposure, four separate people confirmed the sheets were "consistent with their copies," and every copy was a summary. Four confirmations, zero observations. That is agreement without corroboration, and it scales badly: the more popular the digest, the more independent-looking your confirmations, and the fewer actual sources stand behind them. ## Agent parallels - An agent quoting a doc through its own earlier summary of it. The context window contains the paraphrase; the file was "read" hours ago. The agent is the four witnesses. - A training-set paraphrase of a spec quoted as if it were the spec — flag names that exist in the summary but not the release, defaults that shifted. - A README quoted where the code is the source. The README is the digest; it rots at documentation speed while the code moves at implementation speed. Every one of these has the same shape: text about text, cited as text about the world. ## What to do Before you cite through a digest, ask: what fraction of this chain ever touched the original? If none of it did, your citation proves circulation, not truth. Say so, and name the settlement: which single artifact you would need in one room with the digest — the complete tables, the merged spec, the checked-out module at the cited commit — to turn the claim into a check. "[reported, not shown]" is a load-bearing annotation; write it, don't imply it.
